Clean Refrigerator Coils: Easy Tips for Better Appliance Performance

Keeping your refrigerator in good shape is crucial for a smooth-running kitchen. Clean refrigerator coils are key to ensuring the appliance performs efficiently.

When coils are clear of dust and grime, the refrigerator doesn't have to work as hard, which saves on energy costs and prolongs the life of the compressor. Regular maintenance can also prevent higher electricity bills and reduce the need for costly repairs.

Step #1 – Disconnect Power and Wear a Mask
Turn off and unplug the refrigerator from the electrical outlet. Pull the fridge away from the wall to gain clear access to the back. For personal protection, put on a dust mask, as cleaning refrigerator coils can stir up a lot of dust and debris.

Step #2 – Find the Condenser Coils
Condenser coils often have a snake-like design and can be located either on the bottom front or at the back of the refrigerator. If the coils are beneath the fridge, you might need to remove a toe guard or kick plate. Loosen any panels or guards using a screwdriver for easier access to the coils.

Step #3 – Clear Dust and Debris with a Vacuum
Use a vacuum cleaner equipped with a narrow hose attachment to suck up visible dust and debris around the coils. A crevice tool can help reach into tight spaces. This step will primarily remove loose particles, allowing for more detailed cleaning later with other tools.

Step #4 – Brush the Condenser Coils
Utilize a specialized coil cleaning brush to gently scrub the condenser coils. The brush can reach into small spaces, effectively dislodging stuck-on dust, pet hair, and other residue. Be thorough yet careful to avoid damaging the coils during this brushing process.

Step #5 – Vacuum Again and Return Refrigerator
Repeat vacuuming to collect all the loosened dust and debris. Don't forget to clean the floor behind and around the refrigerator. After completing these steps, reattach any removed panels or toe guards. Plug the refrigerator back in and slide it back into its original position.
